Comparing Driver Distraction in Touchscreen and Physical Vehicle Interfaces

As in-car interfaces shift from physical controls to touchscreens, the safety implications remain underexplored. This between-subjects study measured driver visual distraction using NHTSA glance metrics while participants completed common in-vehicle tasks on each interface type. Touchscreen participants produced 14× more NHTSA violations, accumulated 6× more eyes-off-road time, and averaged nearly 3× more glance deviations — while also rating the touchscreen lower on usability, confidence, and perceived safety. Co-authored with Samyukta Iyengar, Drexel University College of Computing & Informatics.
